The grandfather clock and its inane “tic-tic-tic-tic”s have been banished to the cellar. Its door is sturdy and I have no doubt that it will stand strong against any untimely uprisings. Hee-hee.
Doubt with its slobbering mug and ungainly fangs, however, has dug itself in through the floorboards of my living room. It sits on the floor right now, snuggled up grotesquely to my feet. Its heckles are growing more biting, more knowing, more inarguable by the moment.
I’ve tried to kick the trickster away but it doesn’t budge. I think it’s grown roots.
I simply refuse to move. I will not leave this story behind, I will not leave poor John Doe in its clutches without a proper name (lol!).
So, excuse me if I get a little sidetracked as I write tonight’s blog. Doubt is damned distracting and hell on the ankles (nippy little bastard).
The most important news of the night, however, is the Ticker to Madness… Are you ready?… As of 6:30pm on January 30 out of the 5k needed, I have…
5,516 words!!!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we have done it! Somehow we have cranked out five thousand feasible, and hopefully pleasing, words in time for the February 1 deadline…
Now, the caveat. You know, the but. (You knew there was one coming, didn’t you? Or the mangy, snarling mongrel-like thing at my feet wouldn’t have bothered to visit.)
I’ve still got a couple of scenes to write (relatively small ones), plus the ending. Yeah, that’s a lot of work, but I’m still reasonably sure it is doable…
Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll get the thing done. The question is will I like it enough to send it Dreamspinner is the question…. I believe that’s why Doubt is sitting on my rug right now.
I so want this to be good. I want this to sparkle. I want this to be something special, something people will read and say “Wow, that was actually really, really good.” You know the kind of stories I’m talking about. The ones you remember even weeks after having read it? The ones you read again just because you can?
I’m aiming awfully high for a short story I’ve put together in less than 2 weeks. Maybe I should have gone with something simpler, something less memorable but more expected. 14 novels tells you I can write romance, but I want this short story to be great romance…
Jeez, ok, Doubt can now get the hell out of here! I don’t need this kind of crap so close to the finish line. Maybe one of you guys could take the beast for a walk or something, while I churn out a really swell ending? I’d sure appreciate it.
Alright, enough of my whining. It’s time to post this, throw the monster a bone, and get back to work. Wish me luck!
Until tomorrow…
